Selecting a drug rehab center is one of the most important and difficult decisions you will make in your lifetime.
Few of us know what to look for in a quality drug rehab program and not all rehabilitation centers are alike. Each drug rehab has its own program options, credentials, cost, staff qualifications, and effectiveness. Though drug and alcohol addiction are diseases that progress through predictable stages, it takes a trained health professional to make an accurate diagnosis and prescribe the most appropriate treatment.
The ultimate goal of drug rehabilitation is to provide the patient with the right information and tools to achieve long term abstinence. In order for someone to maintain this goal most drug rehabilitation centers address a person’s medical and psychiatric needs, and provide nutritional and medical counseling. The drug rehabilitation programs also facilitate family healing, development of interpersonal relationships and improvement of daily living skills. There are many different way to go about a drug rehabilitation process including medical detoxification, free standing residential addiction treatment centers, hospital based rehabilitation units, out patient treatment programs, therapeutic communities and adolescent treatment to name a few.
A drug rehab treatment center should offer a variety of treatment programs that meet individual needs.
These drug rehab programs may include inpatient, residential, outpatient, and/or short-stay options. The difference between inpatient and a residential treatment center is that inpatient services are provided by a licensed hospital, while residential programs usually do not meet the same rigorous standards of medical care. The length of stay depends on the severity and stage of the disease.
Medical detox is a short term program lasting from 3 to 10 days, where one is cut off from all drugs. This type of drug rehabilitation is usually just the first step in reaching life long success. Most of those who choose this type of treatment may experience symptoms of withdrawal including sweats, cramping and anxiety or leading up to the more severe symptoms of seizures, convulsions or tremors. These risks associated with this type of drug rehabilitation are too great to be done with out the proper medical care and supervision. The out patient drug rehabilitation process is more suitable for those who are employed, have broad social support systems, can maintain abstinence for about 72 hours and are motivated. Patients usually live at home and attend classes several times a week.
This type of drug rehabilitation is not right for every one, and an assessment can be done to determine what is best for you or your loved one. This type of program may last six weeks with each meeting last around 3 hours. Another type of drug rehabilitation is aimed toward adolescents; this teen program is an option for self destructive teens who are abusing drugs and/or alcohol. This residential treatment provides an opportunity in a structured area with medical and mental health professionals for struggling teens to be a part of a community of their peers who are going through similar issues.
